Introducing the First Annual Duxbury Food and Wine Festival! (This article first ran in the Duxbury Clipper)

In five short weeks, the town of Duxbury will host one of the premiere food festivals of the South Shore. The Duxbury Food and Wine Festival will showcase the very best seafood, meats, and produce, while pairing them with an almost endless assortment of carefully selected wines and craft beers. The Festival is comprised of five unique events taking place over four days.

Oktoberfest, which debuted last fall, kicks off the festivities. This year, over 100 craft beers from around the world will be represented at this fun, casual party. Oktoberfest fare will include bratwurst, dumplings, wiener schnitzel, strudel, mustards and pretzels. It runs 6 PM to 9 PM on September 25th, at the Duxbury Bay Maritime School, and proceeds benefit the Duxbury Food Pantry via the Duxbury Lion’s Club.

Food For Thought, takes place at the Duxbury Student Union on Saturday, September 27th from noon to 4pm. This free event will explore where our food comes from, and how we can prepare it healthfully. A local farm stand will offer seasonal organic food. Chef’s demonstration, workshops on cheese making, goat farming, and beekeeping, and a “Fear Factor” style food demo, make this event one the whole family will enjoy.

No festival is complete without a Grand Tasting. From 3pm to 5pm on Saturday, September 27th, guests will have the opportunity to taste over 150 superlative wines from around the world. In addition, educational seminars will occur before, during, and after the tasting. The Grand Tasting will be held at the Ellison Center for the Arts, and there will be a Wet Paint auction where artists’ very recent, “wet paint” works will be on site for viewing and bidding. Proceeds will benefit the Festival’s DHS Culinary Student Scholarship Fund.

The crescendo of the Festival is A Gala Evening on the Bay. This three hour wine dinner boasts live music and spectacular views from the Duxbury Bay Maritime School. Over 100 wines, at wine stations representing top vintners, will be paired with the gourmet offerings of A Catered Affair. The dinner will last from 6pm to 9pm, when guests will move to the lawn for a Farfar’s ice cream social, to which the entire town is invited. The gala will benefit the DHS Culinary Student Scholarship Fund.

Duxbury Bay is a hub of oyster farming, and the Snug Harbor Oyster Harvest celebrates Duxbury’s renowned aquaculture. From 3pm to 6pm, at The Winsor House Inn, attendees will be able to sample the best the bay has to offer, along with wine and beer that emphasizes the delicate and delicious nature of the oysters. The Oyster Harvest will benefit the Duxbury Student Union.
